Principles over processes

As someone who has been there for nearly all the decade of OneFifty, Tom Eyres, Head of Studio and Production, reflects on the principles that have evolved with the business – and the thinking behind them that hasn’t.

Ten years is a long time in social media.

Ten years matter because this year marks a decade of OneFifty, as many of you already know.

I’ve been here for nearly eight of those ten years, which means I’ve had a pretty good view of how the business has changed – and the things that have stayed consistent.

In that time, platforms have come and gone, the team has grown, and the work we do has evolved. Technology has changed what is possible, often before anyone got used to the last thing.

OneFifty’s principles have evolved too. But, in many ways, they haven't at all.

The exact words have been revisited, refined and added to over the years to reflect the OneFifty of today. But the thinking behind them has stayed pretty consistent.

At their core, they’re about doing great work, treating people the way you’d expect to be treated, and caring about how things get done. We call it doing the right thing.

I've always liked that OneFifty has principles rather than a long list of rules. They give people a framework for making decisions, while leaving room for judgement and common sense.

Today, there are seven:

  1. Do the right thing

  2. Respect other people’s time

  3. Details matter- sweat the small stuff

  4. Principles>process

  5. Challenge mediocrity

  6. Win together

  7. Do all the things

They all show up in different ways.

Sometimes “respect other people’s time” means not booking the meeting that could have been a message.

Sometimes “details matter” means being the person who spots the tiny thing nobody else will ever know was wrong.

“Do all the things” has probably described my eight years at OneFifty better than any job title ever has.

The wording of the principles has changed as OneFifty has grown, and it probably will again.

But the important bits underneath them haven’t.
